8 ways to start or develop your activity as a yoga teacher

May 16, 2023 | Business & Mindset

Once their yoga certificate is in their pocket, new yoga teachers wonder how to find their first students and or teach.

The first thing that usually comes to mind is to contact a yoga studio to offer his classes. Or the yoga center in which we practice. However, the centers do not necessarily have open positions, the courses are generally paid modestly so that you have to accumulate many courses to hope to make a living from your job as a yoga teacher. However, they can offer you occasional replacements.

The good news is that there are many options that allow you to give your courses and have an income. Here are some of them to get started as a yoga teacher.

  1. Home classes

Creating a yoga space at home if the place allows it while maintaining your privacy and family life is an option for some yoga teachers who are starting or have moved from Paris to enjoy larger spaces.

It is ideal for those who want to work from home and welcome students without going to the students’ homes. It’s less costs and no rent to pay. Having a close clientele gives you time to continue developing other projects.

Another advantage of using your home as a workspace is that, depending on your country, you can benefit from a tax reduction. Consult your accountant to see what is possible in your case.

Be careful to ensure that you respect the rules on access and structures to welcome students to your home.

  1. Yoga classes in your garden

Do you have a beautiful outdoor space? Take advantage of this corner of nature to offer your yoga classes during the summer or if the weather permits.

Often locked in the office or teleworking, students will enjoy practicing in the fresh air and breathing!

For you, it is a time saveer since you do not spend it in transport and money because there is no rent to pay.

  1. Yoga classes in a park or green space

The same applies to yoga classes in a park or green space. The advantage is that it also gives you good visibility because visitors to the park will be able to show curiosity and interest in joining your course.

However, be sure to ask the municipality for permission to give a paid course.

  1. Go to the students’ homes

Lack of time, personal comfort, people’s special needs such as chronic pain, neuropathic pain, fatigue… many people prefer to receive their teacher in an individual and personalized session at home.

This comfort has a price and it is customary to pay your particular yoga teacher more generously for this service. This allows you a better remuneration than a group class in a yoga studio for example.

  1. Online courses

With the rise of teleworking, people have invested in space and equipment to practice yoga at home.

Practical, time saving, …. students are now used to this new online offer and many appreciate being able to practice from home.

For the yoga teacher, it is also the opportunity to offer his classes to a wider community beyond the local community. It is also the lack of rent to pay, less time in transport, less fatigue…

This requires you to invest in a Zoom type subscription and possibly a registration automation system according to the number of courses and students you welcome to your courses.

Of course, this does not replace a face-to-face indoor practice, sometimes poses technical, connection, access constraints for a certain audience…

Personally, I prefer small groups of students for my online courses so that I can guide variations or alignments when necessary.

  1. Associations and wellness center

As yoga teachers, people come to us because they want to do themselves good or enjoy the benefits of yoga for their problem: endometriosis, menstrual pain, side effects of premenopause, fertility, PMA support,…

Offering your services in a place that meets these needs will not only be very satisfying for you, but will also bring you financial stability.

In addition, you operate in a rapidly expanding sector.

Training you in these fields will not only help and accompany these women with confidence but your expertise will be widely acclaimed and requested as much by the women concerned as by these centers.

If you want to train, go take a look at my training in yoga therapy and women’s health (Endometriosis, fertility, PMA course…).

  1. Corporate yoga: yoga classes in companies

Some companies offer yoga classes at their headquarters to allow their employees to find a work-life balance.

This is perhaps the most delicate path to take for several reasons: no adapted premises, employees teleworking, no desire to offer yoga classes, already a teacher in place…

Then, you must find the right interlocutor in the company, settle practical elements but also negotiate: will the company pay you or will the employees pay you for your services? What will be the style? Can meditation be taught? What if there is a return to telework for all employees? Or wearing a mask? Every little detail that will cost the company will be discussed.

This requires some investment and skills on your part. In addition to the uncertainty to be managed on many points in this period. The advantage is that the remuneration is higher than in most studios.

One of the best options for company courses is to offer it to your company. Many yoga teachers practice part-time or in addition to their full-time in companies.

Your company knows you and it will be easier to set up a course. In addition, you are usually already physically present on your company’s premises, which saves travel time and your break time. This article that talks about this opportunity may interest you.

8. Thematic workshops

Respond to a particular interest or need of your students. The opportunity to also capture people who would not otherwise go to classical yoga classes, who want an immersion,…

Ex: yoga and endometriosis workshop, yoga and fertility….

These spaces offer times for exchanges, sharing, adapted practices, to feel understood and less alone in your journey….

It is also more income for you because the price of workshops is generally higher than a classic course. It is also for you quality time offered to your students who will find help with their needs and problems beyond the well-being provided by a yoga class.

Let’s take this example: a 2-hour yoga workshop adapted to endometriosis with 8 students at 40 euros.

That’s 320 euros.

Less the rental price of the room which is 50 euros in a big city.

That’s 270 euros for you.

To reach this amount by giving a group class in a yoga studio, you would have to give an average of 6 to 7 classes to reach this income. Count the preparation time of each course, travel, class time… This can go up to 15-20 hours easily.

Completing your workshop, retirement or knowing what service to offer, how and at what price, however, requires certain preliminary steps. If you want to be accompanied to go faster and be guided step by step, do not hesitate to book a slot together (free) to discuss the next step to set up for you.

In today’s world, you have many options to start or develop your yoga teacher activity, whether full-time or part-time. Of course, opt for the proposals that seem most accurate to you according to your preferences, way of teaching, community…

All these options can be combined to suit you. In any case, take good care of yourself!
