3 reasons to ask your yoga students for testimonials

May 16, 2023 | Business & Mindset

After a group yoga class or in private, we observe with kindness the feeling after class of our students. Some still absorb the benefits of the session and extend their immersion in the present moment, others come to us to ask questions or share their feelings.

The testimonials of your yoga students are as useful and valuable for your current students as they are for you and your yoga teacher activity.

Collecting testimonials is also an integral part of my women’s yoga and yoga therapy training for yoga teachers and health professionals.

Why ask for feedback and testimonials from your yoga students? In this article, we explore 3 main reasons (and one as a bonus, often forgotten and yet makes a big difference) for which receiving valuable feedback from your students can help you grow your yoga teacher activity (but also for them and for you).

For better self-knowledge as a yoga teacher

Feedback from your students after a yoga session can allow you to discover facets of yourself and your teaching that you may not be aware of.

This can give you indications on how your students feel in your classes, why they came to you, what makes your difference, what they appreciate and why they return to your classes…

This feedback from your students can help you develop and refine your “Personal Branding”, your uniqueness. You will also be able to confirm if what you want to pass as energy or what you release is aligned with your students’ perception of it.

“Personal Branding” or “personal brand image” is actually often complex for yoga teachers. It may seem in contradiction or conflict with what yoga means to you. There is still a difference between using yoga as “your” “brand” and personal branding. Your personal branding can communicate in an authentic and aligned way your unique relationship with yoga and how you share it with your students by honoring the roots and tradition of yoga.

Feedback from your students will also help clarify your message to other students who look like you and them, to highlight your way of teaching and what you propose… using a language that is yours but also that your students and future students are looking for.

For a better understanding of the needs of your yoga students

In my women’s yoga group classes, many women came because they were looking for a softer yoga aligned with their female rhythm. They had been able to try group classes but sometimes could not practice all the postures, had pain, could feel tired by the rhythm of the class…

By exchanging with them at the end of the course, I noticed that they had particular problems: endometriosis, adenomyosis, pelvic pain, fertility, PMA course…

They also wanted to go deeper by being guided more personally.

We have thus set up individualized and personalized sessions. I also offered thematic workshops such as workshops dedicated to endometriosis and adenomyosis…

If you want to deepen your knowledge and help your students affected by endometriosis, do not hesitate to consult the dedicated training page: https://aureliemaire.com/endo-yoga-flow

Exchanging with my students also allows me, for example, to better explain the benefits of a yoga class or a yoga session adapted to individual endometriosis. A student told me that she was not able to take a group yoga class because of her chronic pain. I was able to explain on my site that we adapt the session to the student’s rhythm, making sure to offer variations that do good to the student and especially that go to the essentials (with only a few practices… it requires some special skills to do it by the way) so that she can practice independently at home and enjoy the benefits of the regularity of a practice.

Thanks to feedback from your students, you will have new information about the needs of your yoga students.

If your students need it, other people may also need it.

This allows you to adapt your offer, create a new course, a thematic workshop… You will thus help your students and be able to meet a need for new students in your yoga classes.

To attract new students

Many possible future students (and current ones) read every word of the testimonies and are interested in the experience of other practitioners.

They also provide information on the adequacy of your person and your courses with what they are looking for.

The testimonies of your students can also reassure potential new students who know better what to expect in your classes, how you can help them, what will be the atmosphere to expect, what the students who have practiced in your classes say…

These testimonies give confidence and encourage new students to contact you to participate in your classes This is called “social proof”. Think of yourself when you are looking for a restaurant, make a purchase or look for a yoga studio in a new city, you certainly consult the opinions and feedback of people who have already had an experience with these places or people.

In conclusion, the feedback from your yoga students is important to help your students even better, develop you as a yoga teacher and grow your yoga activity. I like to regularly read the words of my students and teachers I have been able to train.

This is also advice that I share during training and that teachers implement during their training. They learn to collect this valuable feedback to develop their teaching and disseminate it in different media to make their services and activity known and develop.

But even more, these testimonies are there to counteract the manifestations of the famous impostor syndrome, the feeling of illegitimacy (“I am I for”, “I don’t know enough”… They invite them to reconnect to their “why”, their “why” – often help other women in the stages of their lives like them – in moments of doubt and to continue our “mission”

Have you asked your students for feedback and testimonials? Is it natural for you or do you feel some apprehension or resistance? Do you know how to ask for effective testimonials and where to spread them to talk to new students?
